The Current Situation - Safety |
The military uses hazardous materials and faces the same hazard and risk management problems as the private sector. These hazards include the handling, storage and transportation of toxic chemicals and radioactive materials. Like their civilian counterparts, the military needs to carry out HAZOP and PHA studies to ensure that their risks are properly being managed.
The military is also involved in job safety analysis. The U.S. military has adopted MIL-STD-882, which addresses military health risks in the workplace. As well, the U.S. Army has also adopted an ergonomics standard operating procedure.
The military also faces threats to its personnel, equipment and facilities. With the recent acts of terrorism against government and military facilities and material, the Security Vulnerability Analysis (SVA) methodology is gaining in importance. SVA helps the teams of safety and security professionals identify assets, potential adversaries, the likelihood of security breaches, and the resulting consequences. This qualitative approach helps security specialists to establish and prioritize countermeasures. The SVA creates an effective action plan that identifies where and how to implement countermeasures that reduce vulnerabilities and improve overall safety and security.
