Vale Inco Upgrades Mining Process with Dyadem Enterprise Software

TORONTO - December 21, 2007 - Vale Inco Limited has signed a deal with Dyadem to improve the management of change (MOC) for its Thompson, Manitoba mining operation. Dyadem, a leading provider of Quality Lifecycle Management and Risk Lifecycle Management solutions, will provide its enterprise software solution SmartMOC to help Vale Inco manage the MOC process for its entire operations in Thompson including two nickel mines, a mill, smelter and refinery.

Vale Inco's Manitoba Operations are comprised of two underground operations - Thompson and Birchtree Mines, as well as a Mill, Smelter and Refinery. As part of its commitment to SafeProduction and its culture of Zero Harm, Vale Inco is empowering its employees with tools like SmartMOC that ease the bureaucracy of change management and automate change requests for electronic tracking and compliance. One of the most common reasons that a company implements MOC is to achieve compliance for the appropriate regulations or standards - from OSHA, EPA, the ISO series or other regulatory boards.

MOC is a formal process that enables companies to evaluate, authorize and document changes before they are made and ensures proper implementation and proper closure after the changes are made. The purpose of an MOC system is to establish the procedures necessary to ensure that the health and safety, as well as operational risks arising from proposed changes, are managed properly.

"Zero Harm to our employees, the workplace, the community and the environment is the top priority for our operations. Risk management and MOC are a core part of our business. A solution like SmartMOC makes risk management easier for our employees," said Rob Platford, Manager of Engineering and Support Services, Manitoba Operations. "We outgrew our homegrown solution, so we turned to Dyadem as the expert. SmartMOC will provide the Manitoba Operations with a full encompassing Management of Change Process Hazard Analysis System."

Through most of its 100-plus years, Vale Inco was a North American company that brought its nickel to the rest of the world. Today, it is a truly global company, mining in two hemispheres and operating on four continents. The Manitoba operation has a 15,000-ton per day capacity mill; a smelter, which produces 1,400 anodes per day; and a refinery, which produces more than 120 million pounds of 99.9% pure electrolytic nickel annually. It was the world's first fully integrated nickel mining and processing complex.

"Risk Management in process manufacturing is not optional, it's imperative," said Kevin North, president and CEO of Dyadem. "Vale Inco's Manitoba Operations are raising the bar for its competition with a strong commitment to zero harm and management of change. Moving to a corporate platform, an electronic system, and an automated way to notify changes throughout a facility is the best proactive way to approach mining and processing with minimal risk. We're looking forward to Vale Inco's success with SmartMOC."
