Revalidation of PHA's

What is PHA Revalidation?

Revalidating your PHA’s ensures that:

  • The initial PHA’s are consistent with the current practice
  • Know process hazards are identified
  • Adequate controls are in place to manage the hazards
  • Completeness of the initial PHA
  • Consistency with risk rankings
  • Compliance with applicable regulations

Why should I revalidate my PHA’s?

Paragraph (e) of 29 CFR 1910.119, OSHA’s Process Safety Management regulation requires that PHA’s be updated and revalidated every 5 years. In order to comply with the regulation, you must either revalidate your initial PHA or conduct a new PHA on the same process.

Determining the Scope of the PHA Revalidation Study

1. Verify the quality and resolution of the previous study.

2. Verify the existence and rigour of your MOC system and all changes carried out since the initial PHA study.

3. Consider the applicability of RMP regulations – evaluation of off-site impacts.

4. Review the changes in facility standards and protocols relating the PHSA.

5. Conduct PHA revalidation study.
